Article Name : | | ECOLOGICAL AND ANTI-CAPITALISTIC CONSCIOUSNESS IN GEORGE ORWELL'S COMING UP FOR AIR | Author Name : | | Arun Murlidhar Jadhav | Publisher : | | Ashok Yakkaldevi | Article Series No. : | | ROR-803 | Article : | | | Author Profile | Abstract : | | Ecological consciousness is major concern of ecocriticism that investigates the relation between literature and environment. It believes that the natural world is a living, sacred thing in which each individual feels closely attached to a particular place. George Orwell was brought up in the socio-cultural environment of England. He liked and loved the traditional English culture. However, when he observed the drastic change in both agrarian and urban England he felt restless and decided to write on the effects of industrialization and capitalism on traditional ways of life. Coming Up for Air is the outcome of these feelings. It is mainly about Orwell's ecological and anti-capitalistic consciousness. Like ecocriticism, anticapitalism also directs our attention upon the evils of the rapid urbanization and industrial activity. In fact, the destruction of nature and culture is the serious social problem of the modern industrialised society and Orwell has demonstrated this through the difference between the traditional natural England and modern capitalistic industrialised society. | Keywords : | | - literature and environment
