Both in reputation of the two-nation theory the Muslim League and the concept of a Hindu India advocated by and, additionally, in opposition to the practice of casteism and untouchability, the Indian National Congress sought to promote a plural, liberal-religious society in which all citizens would be equal. These professions were incorporated in the Preamble to the Constitution of the new Republic.
