Abstract :
Billy's progress for the quest of the meaning of life begins with a pull of the ‘Other,’ and not by the mere boredom that ensued in his comfortable life. Billy moves beyond the structures of 'normalcy' in society because of this very pull of the ‘Other’. He seeks “life’s meaning” not “in the glossy surfaces of our pretensions but in those dark mossy labyrinths of the soul that languish forever”. The movement of Billy Biswas is not only to relate himself organically to his primitive society and natural surroundings, it is also an endeavour to go beyond them to realize the “glimpse of the other side” as Billy tells Romi, “Most of us are aware only of the side which we are born, but there is always the other side, the valley beyond the hills; the hills beyond the valley”.
