It is also sometimes called 'unauthorized absence'. Truancy often is a symptom of more serious problems like low academic attainment, grade repetition, dropping out of school, substance abuse, gang activity and involvement in criminal activities such as burglary etc. The literature indicates that academic achievement is associated with truant behavior and truants are low on this variable in comparison to regulars. However, in India the variable of truancy has not been given the attention it deserves.
