Agriculture has gained commercial tone in the recent years while it has a significant share in economy of the state. Jammu and Kashmir has the advantage of diverse agro-climatic conditions which enables it to produce a variety of agriculture crops round the year. Agriculture plays an important role in state’s nutritional security as well, including poverty alleviation and employment generation. The state have different topographical and environmental conditions, possesses comparative advantage in the production of various agricultural products. Economic growth, urbanization and globalization and medicinal usage etc. have fueled the higher demand for agriculture commodities in the state which increases the economic benefits from agriculture sector along with export earnings and employment to the state. The paper has evaluated the production, area and productivity trends of major opportunities and problems of saffron production in Jammu and Kashmir. It has examined briefly linkages of agriculture sector in the employment and income generation, export earnings.
